Fez – Two Saudi-backed films, “Hijra” and “Mirage,” are showcasing Saudi Arabia’s expanding cinematic footprint at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, running from August 27 to September 6.
“Hijra,” directed by Shahad Ameen, is screening in the prestigious Spotlight competition on August 28 at Sala Giardino.
Supported by King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra), Saudi Film Commission, and other local initiatives, the film follows a grandmother and her granddaughters on a transformative journey from southern Saudi Arabia to Mecca.
The disappearance of the elder granddaughter triggers a poetic exploration of the Kingdom’s geographic and cultural diversity.
The film is a regional co-production between Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Egypt, with filming locations including Taif, Jeddah, Madinah, AlUla, NEOM, and Duba. Its cast features Khairiah Nazmi, Nawaf Al-Zuhairi, and Lamar Faddan, with a guest appearance by Baraa Alem.
Running concurrently in the Venice Immersive competition is “Mirage,” a virtual reality (VR) film by Naima Kareem.
Developed through Ithra’s Creative Solutions Residency Program, the immersive experience centers on a young girl grappling with anxiety and depression, highlighting Ithra’s commitment to innovative storytelling and mental health awareness.
Noura Al Zamil, Head of Programs at Ithra, said the organization is proud to support projects that bring regional creativity to global audiences.
“At Ithra, we believe in the power of storytelling to transcend borders, and encourage our filmmakers to share their voices with the world,” she stated.
Ithra, a major cultural hub in Dhahran, has played a leading role in Saudi Arabia’s cultural development since 2018, fostering local talent through film production, funding, and international collaboration.
