Fez — Morocco has officially launched the eighth edition of the “Poisson à prix raisonnable” (“Affordable Fish”) initiative as the holy month of Ramadan approaches, expanding its territorial coverage and diversifying its seafood offerings to strengthen supply and stabilize prices nationwide.

The launch ceremony took place Thursday at the Tamesna wholesale fish market, led by Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries Zakia Driouich. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to ensure sufficient quantities of high-quality seafood products are available across national markets, particularly during Ramadan, when demand for fish traditionally increases.

Implemented in partnership with deep-sea fishing vessel owners, the program aims to supply frozen fish processed directly onboard high-sea vessels. These products are characterized by strict quality standards and competitive pricing, offering consumers affordable access to seafood while maintaining freshness and nutritional value.

Expanded coverage and higher volumes

This eighth edition stands out for several key developments. Authorities have increased the total volume of frozen fish set for commercialization to approximately 5,000 tonnes. The initiative will now cover 47 cities and more than 1,100 sales points across all 12 regions of the kingdom, significantly broadening access compared to previous editions.

Officials say the expansion responds to growing demand for seafood during Ramadan and aims to maintain balance between supply and demand while supporting household purchasing power.

New products introduced

For the first time since the initiative began, frozen sardines and anchovies have been added to the product lineup. Around 2,000 tonnes of frozen sardines are expected to be marketed as part of this year’s edition, contributing to greater product diversification and improved accessibility.

By increasing supply, widening geographic reach, and introducing new seafood options, the “Affordable Fish” initiative reinforces Morocco’s commitment to ensuring food availability and price stability during one of the most important periods of the year for Moroccan households.
