Rabat – Opposition is building in Morocco ahead of planned performances by Kendji Girac, with activists and online voices calling for the concerts to be canceled.
The shows, set for later this April in Rabat and Casablanca under “The Unforgettable Show,” have drawn criticism from the Moroccan Campaign for Academic and Cultural Boycott and a growing number of social media users.
The campaign group has urged both the public and organizers to reconsider hosting the artist, pointing to what it describes as his past associations with Israel.
In a statement addressed to producers and event organizers, MACBI argued that inviting the singer raises ethical concerns, citing previous collaborations with Israeli artists, performances in Tel Aviv, and public remarks it views as politically aligned.
The group maintains that cultural programming cannot be detached from broader geopolitical realities.
Online reactions have mirrored this stance, with critics saying the decision to go forward with the concerts overlooks the wider context of the genocide on Gaza.
Calls to withdraw the invitation have intensified in recent days, particularly across digital platforms.
MACBI has indicated that, should the events move forward, it may escalate its response through coordinated boycott efforts and peaceful demonstrations.
The group also referenced recent international legal and political developments, arguing they reinforce the legitimacy of such actions as a form of pressure.
