From historic venues to lively public spaces, there’s an undeniable energy building, promising a celebration of artistic expression, cultural exchange, and fresh perspectives.
Marrakech – Morocco’s iconic Red City is gearing up to host the 4th edition of the Rencontres de la Photographie, set to take place from October 23 to 27.
This international event will bring together photographers from across the globe, with China as the guest of honor.
Participants from Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa will celebrate the diversity of photographic art.
This year’s edition, with a focus on youth and creativity, promises a dynamic program filled with exhibitions, discussions, and cultural exchanges.
First launched in 2016 by the Voix Plurielles association, in collaboration with Cultures Nomades Production (France) and other cultural and economic partners, the Rencontres de la Photographie de Marrakech has rapidly gained international recognition.
In just a few years, it has established itself as a key event in contemporary photography, competing with major festivals like the Rencontres d’Arles, all while maintaining a distinct Moroccan identity.
Today, the event draws a diverse audience, attracting not only art lovers but also professionals and artists from around the world. It has become a major platform for creative exchange, fostering connections and conversations within the international artistic community.
Marrakech: A City United for Photography
For this 4th edition, Marrakech, recently named the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World for 2024, is fully mobilized.
Iconic locations across the city will host exhibitions and events, including Cadi Ayyad University, the Mohammed VI Cultural Center, the Dar El Bacha Museum, and Meydene.
Public spaces such as Koutoubia Square, Ferblantiers Square, and the forecourts of the train station and the Palais des Congrès will also be transformed into open-air galleries.
Global Artists and a Tribute to Women Photographers
The 2024 edition will feature a rich diversity of international artists from Morocco, France, China, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, and Canada, among others. As a cultural crossroads, Marrakech will highlight this global variety of photographic approaches.
A special focus will be placed on women photographers this year. Two notable showcases, or “Cartes Blanches,” will honor Afghan women and the African diaspora, reflecting their resilience and hope.
Additionally, the exhibition “Regard de Femmes” will display the work of three renowned female photographers: Angèle Etoundi Essamba, Cynthia Benjamin Copper, and Mina Kawachy. This tribute to women photographers is one of the most highly anticipated moments of the event.
Over the course of five days, Marrakech will come alive with a wide array of photographic activities. Highlights include international exhibitions, image workshops, portfolio reviews, and conferences and debates.
To enhance the experience of exploring the city’s dispersed exhibitions, bicycles, in partnership with the PIKALA association, will be available for public use. This eco-friendly initiative will allow visitors to move quickly between venues while enjoying the scenic routes of Marrakech.
One unique feature of the Rencontres de la Photographie de Marrakech is its emphasis on youth and creativity.
As the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World for 2024, the city will become a hub of artistic exchange. Four young photographers will have the chance to exhibit their work in public spaces, under the theme El Bahja.
During these five days, Marrakech will transform into a sanctuary of photographic art, blending innovation, tradition, diversity, and passion.
For art and photography lovers, this is set to be an unforgettable experience, with exhibitions running until November 30, 2024.
