Casablanca – Morocco is known for iconic dishes like Bastilla, Rfissa, and djaj mhamar (roasted chicken), but Moroccans are also open to exploring international cuisine.
From Italian and Indian to French and beyond, there’s always room for creativity, whether in reinventing traditional dishes or simply trying something new.
So today, let’s discover how to make a burrito, a Mexican-inspired recipe.
While the burrito originates from Mexico, several variations have developed over time, including the American version.
For example, rice is not typically used in the original style, but it is common in others.
Enough talking, let’s get to the point.
Ingredients
- Large flour tortilla
- 1 cup rice (optional)
- ½ cup cooked black beans
- 100-150 g ground beef
- 1 onion (chopped)
- ¼ cup salsa
- ¼ cup shredded cheese
- 1-2 tomatoes (chopped)
- Juice of ½ lime
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- Salt & pepper
- Oil for cooking
Optional: Guacamole, lettuce, sautéed peppers
Instructions
Rinse 1 cup of rice. Place it in a pot with 2 cups of water and a pinch of salt.
Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and let it cook for 10-15 minutes until the water is absorbed and the rice is tender. Set aside.
Next step: prepare the beef filling
- Heat a little oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for 2-3 minutes until soft.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
- Season with salt, pepper, cumin, paprika, and dried oregano. Mix well.
- Add 1-2 tablespoons of salsa or tomato sauce and let it cook for another 2 minutes so the mixture stays slightly juicy.
- Add cooked beans and chopped tomatoes directly into the same pan.
- Stir everything together and let it cook for 2-3 minutes so the flavors combine.
- Finish with a squeeze of lime juice and mix well.
Once you’re done, warm the tortilla in a dry pan for 20-30 seconds on each side until soft.
Now it’s the time to assemble the burrito.
In the center of the tortilla, add:
- Rice (if using)
- The beef-bean-tomato mixture
- Shredded cheese
- Guacamole, lettuce, sautéed peppers if using.
Well, you’re almost done. Fold the sides inward, then roll tightly. Toast in a pan for 1-2 minutes until slightly crispy.
Bsaha!
