Fez — Maryam Touzani’s “Calle Málaga” is set to open in Moroccan theaters next week on April 22, bringing one of the director’s most anticipated films back home after festival screenings in Venice and Toronto and a growing international box-office run.
The film, presented in Spanish with French subtitles and some dialogue in Darija, follows María Ángeles, a 79-year-old Spanish woman born in Tangier who fights to keep her apartment on Rue Málaga.
Starring Carmen Maura and Ahmed Boulane, the film continues Touzani’s exploration of intimacy, identity, and social boundaries after the international success of “The Blue Caftan.”
“Calle Málaga” is a story of memory, belonging, and resistance, about an older woman whose life in Tangier is shaken when her daughter arrives from Madrid intending to sell the family home. Determined to remain, María Ángeles holds on to the apartment and the objects that define her world
A strong international path before Morocco
Before its Moroccan release, ‘Calle Málaga’ was also screened at last year’s Marrakech International Film Festival, adding local visibility to a film that had already built momentum abroad.
‘Calle Málaga’ has already drawn large audiences in France and Spain, showing strong momentum ahead of its Moroccan release.
The film has also represented Morocco in the 2026 Academy Awards race, a sign of the confidence surrounding its international standing.
Its commercial rollout is backed by major European partners as well. “Calle Málaga” was co-produced by Canal+ and Arte, and recent reporting says the film is expected to move first to Canal+ several months after its theatrical run, before later reaching Arte.
