Casablanca – Morocco has recovered a collection of nine rare fossils dating back between 66 and 72 million years, marking another step in the country’s efforts to protect its natural and geological heritage.

The Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid announced the recovery on Friday, highlighting the operation as another example of Morocco’s commitment to preserving its cultural and natural heritage.

According to the statement, French customs authorities seized the fossils in Menton in February 2025, after they were discovered inside an express freight truck attempting to transport them illegally between Spain and Italy.

The recovered collection includes nine fossils originating from Morocco’s geological basin, among them fossilized teeth belonging to extinct marine reptiles as well as species closely related to ancient crocodiles, all dating back to the Late Cretaceous period.

With its fossil-rich geological basins, Morocco has become an important destination for paleontological research. So, protecting these discoveries has become increasingly important as global demand for rare fossils continues to fuel illicit trafficking networks.

While fossils are often admired for their scientific value, they are also considered an essential part of Morocco’s geological identity, offering researchers valuable insight into ecosystems that existed tens of millions of years ago.

As interest in paleontology continues to grow, discoveries like these highlight Morocco’s important place in the field, where millions of years of geological history continue to provide valuable insight into life on Earth long before the modern world emerged.

The return of the collection reflects the shared commitment of both countries to preserving these irreplaceable discoveries and ensuring they remain accessible for scientific research and future generations rather than disappearing into illegal private trade.
