Rabat – Whether it is a quick bite between classes, an office snack, or something to enjoy at home, choosing the right foods can make a difference.

Instead of reaching for heavily processed snacks, homemade alternatives offer a simple way to enjoy delicious flavors while making more nutritious choices.

A snack is just a small bite between meals to take the edge off hunger and top up your energy. It can be fruit, nuts, a cereal bar, or something baked at home.

Healthy snacking does not have to mean sacrificing taste or spending hours in the kitchen. With a few everyday ingredients, it is possible to prepare satisfying treats that combine flavor, convenience, and nutritional benefits. Two recipes worth trying are healthy banana muffins and no-bake apricot and chocolate bars.

Healthy banana muffins

For those who enjoy baked food, healthy banana muffins are suitable for breakfast or as a snack during the day. They are made with wholemeal flour, ripe bananas, low-fat yogurt, and a small amount of brown sugar. To keep the snack totally healthy, you can replace sugar with a tablespoon of honey.

The recipe makes six muffins, with each serving providing approximately 206 calories. Preparation takes less than 30 minutes, followed by 20 to 30 minutes of baking. To make them, combine 125 grams of wholemeal flour, three tablespoons of light muscovado sugar, two teaspoons of baking powder, one beaten egg, 50 grams of low-fat plain yogurt, 50 milliliters of rapeseed oil, and two mashed ripe bananas.

Mix the dry and wet ingredients separately before combining them, then gently fold in the bananas. Divide the mixture among the cups of a greased or lined muffin tin and bake at 200°C (180°C for a fan oven) until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean. For added convenience, the muffins can be frozen for up to three months, making them a practical option for busy mornings.

Apricot and chocolate bars

For those who prefer a chewy snack with a little crunch, apricot and chocolate bars offer a flavorful alternative. Combining dried apricots, dates, mixed nuts, seeds, cocoa powder, and coconut oil, these no-bake treats bring together fruit, healthy fats, and fiber. Their rich chocolate flavor also makes them a satisfying choice for anyone looking for a sweet snack without turning on the oven.

This recipe makes 16 bars and requires less than 30 minutes of preparation, plus 30 to 60 minutes in the freezer to set. Each serving contains approximately 170 calories and three grams of fiber. To prepare them, finely chop 150 grams of mixed nuts in a food processor, then blend 150 grams of dried apricots and 200 grams of pitted dates into a thick paste. Add the nuts, 50 grams of coconut oil, three tablespoons of cocoa powder, and three tablespoons of mixed seeds, blending until the mixture comes together.

Press it into a lined square tin, cover, and freeze until firm. Finally, cut it into 16 squares and store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. The result is a convenient homemade snack that can be prepared in advance and enjoyed whenever hunger strikes.
