Fez — Prime Video has released the first official image from its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of “God of War,” offering fans a glimpse of Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Callum Vinson as Atreus.

The image arrives as production officially gets underway in Vancouver, marking a major step forward for the series adaptation of the globally successful PlayStation franchise.

The project has already secured a two-season order from Amazon, signaling strong confidence in the show’s long-term potential.

A father-and-son saga at the center

The series will adapt the storyline of the two most recent “God of War” games, which reimagined the franchise within Norse mythology. At the heart of the narrative is the complex relationship between Kratos, the former Greek god of war, and his young son Atreus.

According to the official logline, father and son embark on a journey to spread the ashes of Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother, Faye. Along the way, they confront gods and creatures of the Norse pantheon. The story balances large-scale mythological conflict with an intimate emotional arc.

The premise highlights a dual transformation. Kratos attempts to teach Atreus how to become a better god, while Atreus challenges his father to become a better human. This emotional tension was central to the games’ critical and commercial success, and now forms the backbone of the television adaptation.

Expanding the Norse pantheon

The newly confirmed cast underscores the scale of the production. Max Parker will portray Heimdall, while Ólafur Darri Ólafsson takes on the role of Thor. Veteran actor Mandy Patinkin will play Odin.

Alastair Duncan has been cast as Mimir, with Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka portraying the dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri. Ed Skrein joins the ensemble as Baldur.

The lineup reflects a blend of established performers and rising talents, suggesting Amazon is positioning the series as a prestige fantasy drama in the vein of recent high-profile adaptations.

Creative leadership and production scale

Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer, and showrunner under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Moore is known for his work on expansive genre projects, and his involvement signals a character-driven approach to the material.

Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. Maril Davis executive produces alongside Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis serve as co-executive producers.

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Tall Ship operates under an overall deal at Sony TV.

As streaming platforms continue competing for globally recognizable franchises, the adaptation stands as another example of how video game narratives are increasingly shaping the future of prestige television.
