Fez — Warner Bros. is reportedly developing a feature film set in the universe of “Game of Thrones,” with screenwriter Beau Willimon attached to the project.

The writer, known for his work on the political drama “House of Cards” and the Star Wars series “Andor,” has already submitted a draft script.

The project signals a potential expansion of the globally successful fantasy franchise from television to the big screen.

However, details about the film remain limited. No director has been officially announced, and the cast is yet to be announced.

A return to Westeros on the big screen

The reported storyline centers on “Aegon I Targaryen,” the legendary founder of the Targaryen dynasty who united the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through conquest, centuries before the events depicted in the original series.

Aegon I, also known as Aegon the Conqueror, has never appeared directly on screen in the franchise. His campaign to unite Westeros under Targaryen rule is one of the most significant historical moments in the fictional world created by author George R. R. Martin.

While the character has been referenced in earlier television adaptations, a film focusing on Aegon’s conquest would represent the first cinematic depiction of the origin story that shaped the Targaryen dynasty.

A franchise that continues to expand

The potential movie comes as the “Game of Thrones” franchise continues to grow. The original HBO series, based on Martin’s bestselling fantasy novels “A Song of Ice and Fire,” ran for eight seasons and became one of television’s most successful productions.

The show also spawned a spinoff series exploring the history of the Targaryen family.

“House of the Dragon,” set roughly 200 years before the events of the original series, has already attracted large global audiences and is preparing for another season. Another prequel, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” recently completed its first season.

Together, these projects demonstrate the enduring appeal of the fictional world of Westeros, which blends medieval politics, dynastic conflict, and fantasy elements such as dragons and magic.

Uncertainty surrounding the film’s future

Despite the reported script submission, the film’s future remains uncertain. Industry observers note that Warner Bros. is currently undergoing corporate changes as it explores a potential merger with Paramount Skydance.

If the deal receives regulatory approval, new leadership could reconsider projects currently in development.

At the same time, the “Game of Thrones” brand remains one of the studio’s most valuable entertainment properties.

Paramount Skydance CEO, David Ellison, has indicated that the merged company plans to expand its theatrical slate significantly, aiming to release around 30 films per year. That strategy could make established franchises like “Game of Thrones” particularly attractive for large-scale cinematic projects.

Whether the film ultimately moves forward remains unclear. Still, the mere prospect of bringing the conquest of Westeros to theaters highlights how the franchise continues to evolve long after the original series concluded.
