Rabat — BLACKPINK’s Rosé has returned with her new single “New Trick,” giving fans an early glimpse into a brighter and more playful side of her music.
The uptempo alt-pop and pop-rock track takes a different turn from the introspective tone of her 2024 debut solo album, “Rosie,” embracing a more carefree and energetic sound.
Speaking to Vogue ahead of the release, Rosé described the track as “possibly the cutest thing [she and songwriter Amy Allen] have ever made together.”
At its core, the song is about getting through difficult moments and finding the strength to move forward after a period of pain. Its “new trick” becomes a metaphor for discovering what helps a person move forward and leave heartbreak behind.
Co-written with frequent collaborator Amy Allen, the track combines Rosé’s dreamy vocals with distorted electric guitars. Its sound draws inspiration from the breezy atmosphere of 1990s romantic-comedy soundtracks, while adding touches of early-2000s pop-punk.
A ‘Shot on iPhone’ music video
Dave Meyers, the filmmaker whose credits include work with Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Ariana Grande directed the song’s music video, which o was filmed using an iPhone 18 Pro as part of Apple’s latest “Shot on iPhone” campaign.
Meyers gives the clip a nostalgic coming-of-age aesthetic, with Rosé appearing in school-uniform-inspired styling alongside a red sedan and a purple branded lollipop.
Sunlit imagery, youthful styling and energetic camera movements make the video feel like a 2000s teen movie, mirroring the song’s progression from lovesickness to carefree defiance.
The Meyers-directed video continues Apple’s long-running “Shot on iPhone” series, which has previously featured music videos including The Weeknd’s “Dancing in the Flames,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “Get Him Back!” and Lady Gaga’s “Stupid Love.”
“New Trick” offers an early indication of the next phase of the singer’s solo career, following the success of “Rosie,” which she released in December 2024.
