Rabat – The 7th edition of the Casablanca Arab Film Festival officially opened on Friday, celebrating Arab cinema with a tribute to Egyptian actress Samah Anouar and Moroccan filmmaker Ahmed Boulane for their contributions to the region’s film industry.
The opening ceremony brought together filmmakers, actors, producers, critics, and cultural figures from across the Arab world, marking the start of a week-long program dedicated to showcasing contemporary Arab cinema.
Organized by the Imtidad Association for Culture and Development in partnership with the Casablanca City Council and with support from the Moroccan Cinematographic Center (CCM), this year’s festival runs through July 24.
Speaking during the ceremony, Anouar expressed her gratitude for the recognition, describing the tribute as a meaningful acknowledgment of artists who have shaped Arab cinema.
The Egyptian actress, who is also serving as president of the festival’s short film jury, praised the event’s organization and highlighted the role of film festivals in strengthening cultural and artistic exchange across the Arab world.
Boulane likewise welcomed the honor, calling it a significant recognition of his cinematic career.
The Moroccan director said he was especially pleased to receive the award in his hometown of Casablanca, emphasizing that cinema remains a powerful tool for dialogue between cultures and generations while encouraging emerging filmmakers.
Festival President Fatima Nouali said the event aims to further establish itself as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and the promotion of Arab cinema while highlighting the diversity of artistic voices across the region.
She added that the festival remains committed to building bridges between Arab film industries, with a particular focus on supporting Moroccan cinema and emerging talent.
The 2026 edition features 29 films in the official competition, including 12 feature films and 17 short films, alongside a selection of out-of-competition screenings reflecting the richness of contemporary Arab filmmaking.
The feature film competition jury is chaired by Palestinian director Rashid Masharawi, while Anouar leads the jury for the short film competition.
