Morocco, US Celebrate Years of Diplomatic Friendship on 4th of July

As the United States marks its 247th Independence Day on July 4, Morocco joins in honoring the enduring friendship and shared ideals between the two nations. Rabat – The 4th of July is a moment of reflection not only for Americans but also for Moroccans who recognize the deep historical and diplomatic ties that unite the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States. Since Morocco was the first country to officially recognize American independence in 1777, the two nations have fostered strong cooperation in diplomacy, trade, and culture. Morocco’s early recognition of the US revolution set the stage for one of the longest-standing diplomatic relationships in the world. Over centuries, this alliance has expanded beyond politics into education, economic development, and security partnerships. The US remains one of Morocco’s key allies in North Africa, supporting initiatives that promote stability and prosperity in the region. In recent years, the two countries have engaged in military cooperation and trade agreements that have bolstered Morocco’s growing economy. Cultural exchanges through the US Peace Corps continue to deepen people-to-people connections, exemplified by vibrant Moroccan-American communities in cities like New York and Washington, DC. This year, celebrations in Morocco are marked by events hosted at the US Embassy in Rabat and American cultural centers across the country. Last month, US Consulate General in Casablanca Marissa S. Scott hosted one such gathering, full of American jazz music, and outdoor barbeque stands with traditional food from the country.  Moroccan-American residents use this day to celebrate both their identities, reflecting the blend of traditions and values that enrich their communities. For many, the 4th of July symbolizes freedom, democracy, and the pursuit of opportunity—principles that resonate strongly in Morocco’s ongoing social and economic development. The celebration of the 4th of July in Morocco serves as a reminder of the importance of international friendship based on shared principles. It reaffirms the commitment of both countries to work together on common challenges, from counterterrorism to climate change. For Moroccans and Americans alike, July 4 is more than a national holiday—it is a day to honor a partnership that has endured nearly 250 years and to look forward to a future built on collaboration and mutual respect.

TikTok Star Khaby Lame Leaves US After Visa Trouble

From TikTok fame to immigration trouble under Trump’s new punitive policies: Khaby Lame quietly exits the US. Fez– He doesn’t say much in his videos, but Khaby Lame’s silent expressions have spoken volumes to millions around the world.  This week, however, in a story that has become too often the norm, it was United States immigration officials who had the last word. On June 6, the Senegalese-Italian TikTok sensation was briefly detained by ICE (US Immigration and Customs Enforcement) at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport for overstaying his visa.  He had entered the US on April 30 and, according to officials, exceeded the duration permitted.  The 25-year-old was granted what’s called “voluntary departure,” meaning he avoided formal deportation proceedings but had to leave the country. He did so swiftly and quietly. Khaby Lame hasn’t made a public comment yet, nor has he addressed the incident on his social platforms.  That’s notable for someone who’s built an empire out of wordless, expressive commentary.  With 162 million followers on TikTok alone, Lame holds the top spot globally, known for debunking unnecessarily complicated internet hacks with simple, universal gestures, and that now-iconic shrug with palms up and wide eyes that say it all. But even viral fame doesn’t make you immune to bureaucratic reality. The timing is also telling: since returning to office in January, President Donald Trump has doubled down on aggressive immigration policies.  Mass deportation efforts have been reinstated, and several aspects of these measures are currently being challenged in US courts.  Lame’s run-in with ICE appears to be a high-profile side effect of this renewed crackdown. It’s a strange twist in the story of someone who rose from a factory worker to global celebrity.  Just a few years ago, Khaby was living in a housing project in Chivasso, near Turin, having lost his job in early 2020 during the pandemic.  With nothing but time and a phone, he started making short, soundless videos from his bedroom. The premise? Reacting to over-the-top tutorials with simple, no-nonsense solutions. It worked. The internet fell in love with his dry delivery and universally relatable humor.  His rise was meteoric, and lucrative. Between June 2022 and September 2023, Forbes estimated that he earned $16.5 million in brand deals alone. In January, UNICEF named him a goodwill ambassador. But even the internet’s king of common sense needs to keep an eye on paperwork.  For now, it looks like Khaby will be continuing his quiet comedy somewhere other than the U.S.at least until the visa situation is sorted. And if he ever chooses to address the incident? Don’t expect a press release. Expect a smirk, a sigh, and a pair of outstretched hands that say, “really”? What Is Easter and Why Do Bunnies Lay Eggs?

Easter might be about Jesus’s resurrection, but somehow, a bunny and a basket of eggs stole the show. Fez – Easter is the Christian calendar’s main event, celebrating Jesus Christ’s resurrection three days after his crucifixion.  While the earliest written record of Easter dates back to the 2nd century, many believe that Christians were quietly honoring the resurrection even earlier. Now, the name “Easter” itself is a bit of a mystery. Some credit it to Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon spring goddess, but modern scholars say that theory might be more fantasy than fact.  A more likely story? The word evolved from “in albis” (Latin for “dawn”) and eventually morphed into “eostarum” in Old High German, giving us both the English and German names for the holiday. The great Easter calendar drama The date of Easter hasn’t always been a done deal. In early Christianity, East and West had major beef over when to celebrate the Resurrection.  Eastern churches tied it to Passover, while Western churches insisted on Sunday, the actual day Jesus is believed to have risen.  Things got so heated that the Council of Nicaea (325 CE) had to step in, ruling that Easter would be celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon following the spring equinox.  That’s why Easter can land anywhere between March 22 and April 25. Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar, not the Gregorian one most of the world follows, which is why Orthodox Easter often arrives fashionably late, and never before Passover. Easter isn’t just a Sunday service, it’s a whole experience. It follows Lent (40 days of reflection and fasting), and it’s preceded by Holy Week, which includes Holy Thursday (Last Supper), Good Friday (Crucifixion), and Holy Saturday (the day Jesus was laid in the tomb).  The Easter Vigil, one of the oldest and most dramatic Christian rituals, is packed with candlelight, scripture, baptisms, and a midnight mass that marks the Resurrection. Eggs, bunnies, and blessed lambs Over the centuries, Easter collected a few unexpected sidekicks. The egg, once banned during Holy Week, became a symbol of life bursting from the tomb.  Decorating eggs began in the 13th century, with Orthodox Christians painting them blood red.  Enter the bunny: introduced by German Protestants in the 17th century, the Easter Bunny evolved into a full-blown gift-giver, dropping off candy-filled eggs across Europe and, eventually, the US.  Speaking of eggs: in 1878, President Rutherford B. Hayes made it official, kids could roll eggs on the White House lawn.  That tradition lives on today, joined by egg hunts, chocolate bunnies, and even lamb-shaped cakes.  Behind the cuteness, though, lies one of Christianity’s most profound and hopeful celebrations. US Muslims to Begin Ramadan 2025 on March 1

Many other countries are expected to start observing Ramadan on March 1. The Muslim community in the US is expected to begin observing the holy month of Ramadan on March 1. The Fiqh Council of North America said the crescent moon to be visible on the evening of February 28, which would confirm March 1 as the start of Ramadan this year. The council also predicts  Taraweeh, the extra prayers performed every night during the holy month, to begin on February 28. Taraweeh prayers are performed after Isha prayers a part of the religious rituals of the holy month. Several countries around the world are expected to celebrate Ramadan on March 29, including Saudi Arabia, according to astronomy calculations. This year’s holy month comes as the Muslim community in the US continues to grow significantly, according to estimates from Pew Research.  The leading think tank recently estimated at 3.45 million people of all ages, including 2.15 million adults, the number of Muslims in the US.  “The U.S. Muslim community is made up heavily of immigrants and the children of immigrants from around the world,” Pew said, noting that Muslim Americans are considerably younger than the overall US population. During the holy month, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to sunset. Sexual activities, drinking, and chewing gums are also prohibited. Muslim communities in the US usually gather during iftar celebrations organized by one of the community members, or by groups. Mosques also organize similar feasts. In addition, the holy month is notably marked by the exchange of visits between friends and families to share Iftar. Muslims fast for 29 to 30 days depending on the crescent moon sighting that determines the beginning and the end of Ramadan.

Could RedNote be the New TikTok?

With the looming possibility of a TikTok ban in the US, users are flocking to a rising alternative, eager to explore what the new platform offers. Fez – As the United States approaches a potential ban on TikTok, users are migrating to alternative platforms.  One such platform, Xiaohongshu—known internationally as RedNote —is experiencing a significant surge in downloads, becoming the most downloaded free app on the Apple App Store.  RedNote is a Chinese social media platform that blends lifestyle content with e-commerce features. Launched in 2013, it has amassed over 300 million users, primarily in China, the New York Post reports. The platform allows users to share experiences, discover trends, and engage in social shopping. Users, often referred to as “TikTok refugees,” are exploring RedNote’s features, which include short-form videos, live streams, and product reviews.  The platform’s emphasis on lifestyle inspiration and community-building tools has attracted a diverse user base.  The influx of American users on RedNote has led to a unique cultural exchange. Live chatrooms now host discussions between American and Chinese users, sharing societal insights and experiences.  To accommodate the new user base, RedNote is enhancing its English language accessibility, making navigation more intuitive for non-Chinese speakers. The future of RedNote in the US remains uncertain. While it offers a platform for displaced TikTok users, questions about data privacy and content moderation persist, similar to those being asked about TikTok.  Additionally, the US government’s stance on Chinese-owned apps could impact RedNote’s operations.  Despite these challenges, RedNote’s rapid growth indicates a strong demand for alternative social media platforms. As TikTok faces potential restrictions, platforms like RedNote are emerging as viable alternatives. Whether RedNote will become a mainstay in the world of US social media depends on its ability to navigate cultural differences, regulatory challenges, and user expectations.
