Rabat – The singer Sabrina Carpenter apologized for mistaking her fan’s Zaghrouta for a yodel and calling it “weird” during her performance at Coachella.
On Saturday, the singer apologized in a post on X, saying, “My apologies, I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly.”
“My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm, and not ill-intended. Now I know what a zaghrouta is!”
During a quiet moment in her show, a fan expressed her excitement and let out a Zaghrouta, then Carpenter replied with “I think I heard someone yodel.” “Is that what you’re doing? I don’t like it.”
The fan then added, yelling out, “It’s my culture.” Carpenter said, “That’s your culture, is yodeling?” furrowing her eyebrows.
The moment, captured on livestream and shared widely online, sparked immediate backlash.
Zaghrouta is a traditional high-pitched celebratory sound made by women in parts of the Middle East and North Africa.
Now, fans are sharing their Zaghroutas on TikTok under the hashtag, “Sabrina Carpenter I have a message for you,” showing the different types of ululations from different Middle Eastern and North African Zaghroutas.
Reactions to her apology were mixed. Some fans praised her on https://x.com/SabrinaAnnLynn/status/2043076482529108262"> X for responding quickly and taking accountability, while others argued that the incident reflects a broader issue of cultural awareness, especially on global stages like Coachella, where audiences are increasingly diverse.
